SCROLL DOWN THIS PAGE IMMEDIATELY TO SEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK AND THIS DUST JACKET. Philip Kindred Dick and his twin sister Jane Charlotte Dick were born six weeks premature on December 16, 1928. The death of Jane, six weeks later, on January 26, 1929, profoundly affected Philip K. Dick’s life, leading to the recurrent motif of the “phantom twin” in his books. He died in Santa Ana, California in 1982. Philip K. Dick was a novelist, a short story writer, and essayist, and a philosopher; most of his works were science fiction. He explored philosophical, sociological, political, and metaphysical themes in his fiction which was dominated by monopolistic corporations, authoritarian governments, and altered states consciousness. He also used his personal experiences to address the nature of drug abuse, paranoia, schizophrenia, theology, metaphysics, and transcendental experiences. The novel THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE used the science fictional trope of alternate history, which earned him a Hugo Award for Best Novel. Eleven major films were based on his works, including “Blade Runner,” “Total Recall,” “A Scanner Darkly,” “Minority Report,” “Screamers,” and several others. Dick’s family later moved to San Francisco. He spent a couple of years in Washington, D.C. with his mother, who had divorced his father. They then moved back to California. Dick states that he read his first science fiction magazine when he was twelve. He attended Berkeley High School and was in the same graduating class as the great science fiction and fantasy author Ursula K. Le Guin, although they did not know each other at the time. He attended the University of California, Berkeley for a short time. In his studies (mostly on his own) of philosophy, he described himself as “a cosmic pantheist,” believing in a universe only as an extension of God. Later he came to the conclusion that, in a certain sense, the world is not entirely real and that there is no way to confirm whether the universe is truly there. Philip K. Dick was married five times, to Jeanette Marlin, Kleo Apostolides, Anne Williams Rubinstein, Nancy Hackett, and Leslie (Tessa) Busby. He had three children, Laura Archer, Isolde Freya, and Christopher Kenneth. Dick sold his first story in 1951 and wrote full-time from that point. His debut novel was SOLAR LOTTERY, published in 1955. He also attempted to write “mainstream” fiction, but after having most of his manuscripts returned, he stopped trying it and went back to science fiction. After winning the 1963 Hugo Award for THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE, he was lauded as a genius in the science fiction world, but the mainstream literary world was unappreciative. In his later years Dick was poor and sometimes almost destitute. He wrote: “When I was ill, Robert Heinlein offered his help, anything he could do, and we had never met; he would phone me to cheer me up and to see how I was doing. He wanted to buy me an electric typewriter, God bless him — one of the few true gentlemen in the world. I don’t agree with many of the ideas he puts forth in his writing, but that is neither here nor there. One time when I owed the IRS a lot of money and couldn’t raise it, Heinlein loaned the money to me. I think a great deal of him and his wife; I dedicated a book to them in appreciation. Robert Heinlein is a fine-looking man, very impressive and very military in stance; you can tell he has a military background, even to the haircut. He knows I’m a flipped-out freak and still he helped me and my wife when we were in trouble. That is the best in humanity, there; that is who and what I love.” Toward the end of his life, Dick befriended budding science fiction writers K.W. Jeter, James Blaylock, and Tim Powers. In the early part of 1974, Dick apparently experienced a series of hallucinations in which he saw a pink beam of intelligence, geometric patterns, and brief pictures of Jesus. At that point he claimed he began to live parallel lives, one as himself, and the other as “Thomas,” a Christian persecuted by Romans in the 1st century, CE. Dick’s stories typically focused on the fragile nature of what is real and in the construction of a personal identity. Many of his stories include characters who slowly discover that their everyday world is actually an illusion constructed by powerful external entities or vast political conspiracies. He himself identified one major theme of his work as the question,” What constitutes the authentic human being?” The Philip K. Dick Award was founded by Thomas Disch with assistance from David G. Hartwell, Paul S. Williams, and Charles N. Brown. The award honors the previous year’s best science fiction paperback novel published in the U.S. Philip K. Dick was the author of such great and famous books as VULCAN’S HAMMER, DR. FUTURITY, THE COSMIC PUPPETS, SOLAR LOTTERY, MARY AND THE GIANT, THE WORLD JONES MADE, THE MAN WHO JAPED, THE BROKEN BUBBLE, TIME OUT OF JOINT (offered here), CONFESSIONS OF A CRAP ARTIST, THE MAN WHOSE TEETH WERE ALL EXACTLY ALIKE, THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE, MARTIAN TIME-SLIP, DR. Dick was (and remains) one of the best, most important, most famous, and most collectible science fiction authors of all time. From the dust jacket: “ . . .TIME OUT OF JOINT . . . A Novel of Menace . . . by Philip K. Dick . . . RAGLE GUMM has an unusual mind . . . Consider, for instance, the way he earns his living — the way he earns his living — by consistently winning a daily newspaper contest called Where Will the Little Green Man Be Next? . . . It’s a mind that plays tricks on him, though. Sometimes the whole town, usually so humdrum, seems to evaporate and in its place are straws and scraps of paper. At such moments Ragle feels that nothing is real except himself. Then he begins to doubt his own sanity. Why is he the only person in his small California town who has never heard of an apparently famous movie star — a certain Marilyn Monroe? . . . Ragle’s uneasiness turns to fear as more baffling incidents occur. Surely he is mad to suspect that the nation, even the whole world, is centered around him. But inexorably the evidence piles up, pointing to a conclusion as fantastic as a nightmare, but as grimly logical as a countdown . . . With devilish ingenuity Philip K. Dick pulls the reader into a bewildering world where appearance and reality change places in the blink of an eye and the line between mind and matter disappears. Unnerved, perhaps, but fascinated, he will be drawn through mounting tension to the climax when, with jolting clarity, the solution leaps into focus. It is a picture which is awesomely and terrifying possible . . . » From the rear flap of the dust jacket: » . . . The Author . . . PHILIP K. DICK was born in Chicago but has spent most of his life in Berkeley, California. His first writing was done for radio and, after attending Anthony Boucher’s classes in writing, he began to write short stories. Since 1951, he has been a full-time free-lance writer, with stories appearing in as many as seven different magazines in the same month . . . Now Mr. Dick writes novels only and lives in the small ranch town of Point Reyes Station, north of San Francisco . . . » From the rear panel of the dust jacket: Fright seized him . . . Not again, he thought. Not again! It’s happening to me again. The soft-drink stand fell into bits. Molecules. He saw the molecules, colorless, that made it up. Then he saw through, into the space behind, the trees and sky. He saw the soft-drink stand go out of existence, along with the counter man . . . In its place was a slip of paper. He reached out his hand and took hold . . . On it was printing, block letters: SOFT-DRINK STAND From TIME OUT OF JOINT ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I grade books and dust jackets: fine, near fine, very good, good, fair, and poor. I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in detail. In other words, it is incumbent upon the SELLER to know what is and is not a 1st edition. Mistakes can be made (and corrected), of course, but if you DON’T KNOW, don’t try to sell a book as a 1st edition. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CONDITION: A NEAR FINE book in a VERY GOOD dust jacket. The book is tight and square in its orange boards binding with black lettering on the spine and on the front of the book. The book is not spine-leaned; unusual thus. There is no writing in the book; no bookplates; no remainder marks. The dust jacket is not price-clipped and shows the correct price of $3.50 on the lower front flap. The front panel of the dust jacket appears to be in close to around NEAR FINE condition with bright colors and a little rubbing, but less than is usually encountered. The rear panel of the dust jacket shows some rubbing, which is usual for copies of this dust jacket, but in this case, the rubbing is less than is usually encountered. The dust jacket has undergone some archival (no tape) restoration and reinforcement, mainly at the head and heel of the spine panel of the dust jacket, that has been accomplished by a professional paper conservationist. Overall, this is clearly a collectible 1st edition copy of one of Philip K. Dick’s best and most famous novels. The great and famous and iconic dust jacket artwork is by Arthur Hawkins, as noted at the bottom of the front flap of the dust jacket. A MUST FOR THE COLLECTOR OF HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT SCIENCE FICTION 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF AWARD-WINNING SCIENCE FICTION AUTHORS’ 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF PHILIP K. DICK 1st EDITIONS! ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Additional photos are available upon request. I am continuing to list some of my best books (especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions) on EBAY not so much as auctions (due to the fact that EBAY charges quite a bit to list items for reserve auctions), but more along the lines of listing my “catalogue” of books that I have for sale. I’m not going to “give” these books away, but my opening bids and Buy-It-Now prices are usually a fair amount below market value. Furthermore, however, for certain scarce books in great condition, I do expect to get close to what they’re worth. Stay with me; I always have a number of important, collectible, cornerstone science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions listed. Many thanks! All items are being offered for sale elsewhere; I reserve the right to end this listing early if this item sells elsewhere. __________________________________________________________________________________ Note: I own the following two books: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY JUSTICE. Subterranean Press, 2014. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY MERCY. Subterranean Press, 2016. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I am looking for: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY SWORD. Subterranean Press, 2015. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I would like to round out this set by acquiring the #2/500 copy of ANCILLARY SWORD. If anyone has this copy and is willing to sell it on EBAY, I would be highly interested in obtaining it so that all my copies would have matching numbers. Many thanks. __________________________________________________________________________________ Contact me if you’re looking for a particular title or titles.
